GMCC is pleased to shine a spotlight on Harry Staley in our “Community Proud” series.
If you have stepped into the lobby at Delamar Mystic lately, you have probably felt it—that effortless warmth that transforms a beautiful hotel into a beloved gathering place. That is Harry. As Hotel Manager, he blends an old-school, front-porch kind of welcome with the precision and standards of a five-star operation. He’ll tell you it is simple: be available, be consistent, and treat every guest like a neighbor.
Delamar Mystic celebrated its soft opening in February 2025, and from the beginning, Harry has been intent on elevating hospitality in Mystic—crafting unforgettable experiences that showcase the town’s storied past and its breathtaking riverfront setting.
A Mystic native, Harry attended Pine Point School in nearby Stonington. Some of his first jobs were quintessentially local—Mystic Aquarium, Abbott’s Lobster, and New England Science & Sailing (NESS). He spent countless summers sailing out of Stonington (and still does whenever he can), played college lacrosse, and even hosted a radio show, envisioning a career in sports journalism and broadcasting. But hospitality found him instead. A student job at a resort led to a full-time offer after graduation, and he leaned in—spending four years with The Breakers on the South Carolina coast, honing his eye for service, leadership, and team culture.
When the world changed in 2020, so did Harry’s course. He returned to New England to join the Ocean House Collection in Westerly, RI, where he managed the Forbes Five-Star Weekapaug Inn and deepened his commitment to meticulous, heartfelt hospitality. In time, Charles Mallory reached out, inviting him to help spearhead the opening of Delamar Mystic. It was the perfect convergence of purpose and place—home-field hospitality with global polish—and Harry has been pouring that energy into the property and community ever since.
Ask his team what defines his leadership, and you will hear the same refrain: he is available. Housekeepers, front-desk associates, servers, and guests all know they can find him—on the radio, in the hallway, or right out front. That accessibility sets the tone: people speak up sooner, issues are resolved faster, and successes are celebrated together. It is management by presence—and it works.
You see it, too, in the way he welcomes travelers to town. Harry launched “Morning Coffee Walks with Harry” on Fridays, where guests can enjoy a warm cup of coffee, a friendly stroll downtown and across the Mystic Drawbridge, and a few local stories along the way. When guests stay at Delamar, they do not just visit Mystic—they become part of it.
Harry lights up when you ask about Delamar Mystic. Its design follows a deeply personal vision, incorporating nautical touches that honor Mystic’s shipbuilding heritage—vintage charts, maritime artifacts, and the working river just beyond the windows. Those details are not décor for décor’s sake; they anchor a guest experience that feels unmistakably Mystic. That same spirit of connection extends to Delamar’s local partnerships—with Mystic Seaport Museum, Cure Med Spa, RiverLane, Advantage Personal Training, Kitch, and more. Harry notes that these relationships helped the hotel feel welcome—and part of the community—from day one.
Within its first year, the hotel garnered national acclaim, earning a coveted spot among Condé Nast Traveler’s Top 24 Hotels in the Northeast—a remarkable debut that reflects the team’s exceptional caliber, consistency, and immediate impact.
In every property Harry has served, it has always come down to one principle: quality, done personally. That is why boutique hotels resonate with him—they allow space to connect, to remember names, to anticipate preferences, and to make each stay feel like a return. His influence has not gone unnoticed; colleagues across the region have recognized him as an Emerging Leader of the Year with Rhode Island Hospitality earlier in his career. Still, he is quick to redirect the spotlight to his team: “Our team’s passion and commitment to genuine hospitality make every guest experience special.”
Ask Harry what keeps him rooted here, and he does not hesitate: the water. If he is not at Delamar, he is probably on a boat—sailing to Fishers Island, catching a sunset after a long shift, or lining up for Mudhead races. Living on the coastline means access—to adventure, to calm, and to the kind of perspective only a horizon can offer. Home, he adds, is also the people: business owners who give downtown its small-town charm, neighbors who wave from the dock, and teammates who show up for one another when it matters most.
Harry is a devoted cat dad to his beloved Kodak and a passionate supporter of Best Buddies. What inspires him most these days is watching Delamar Mystic grow—seeing a hotel rise from blueprints to reality, and a team evolve right alongside it.
“Everyone who joins this property has potential,” he says. “My job is to see it early, talk about it often, and help them get there.”
As for being featured in Community Proud, Harry shares, “It means a lot personally because over the last couple of years, the Chamber community has grown and made Community Proud an important series. The people featured are highly regarded in the community, and being part of that group is an honor.”
