Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce Recognizes Dr. Jay Nieuwenhuis in ‘Community Proud’ Series

The Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce is pleased to recognize Dr. Jay Nieuwenhuis, D.C. in our ‘Community Proud’ series sponsored by Charter Oak Credit Union.

Dr. Jay Nieuwenhuis has been part of the Mystic and Groton community since he was just nine years old, and today, he is proud to give back in a meaningful way through his work in chiropractic care. Growing up immersed in sports including hockey, baseball, football, track, and rowing, movement and physical wellness have always been central to his life. That early passion has naturally evolved into a career dedicated to helping others feel and perform at their best.

Now living in Pawcatuck with his fiancée, Krystal, and their energetic four-year-old Australian Shepherd, Thiago, Dr. Nieuwenhuis has built both a personal and professional life rooted in the region. Whether he is playing hockey, coaching, or spending time with family, his connection to the community is evident in everything he does.

Dr. Nieuwenhuis currently practices at The Joint Chiropractic in Groton and has spent the past three years developing his approach to patient care. His journey includes prior experience at East West Chiropractic and Mystic Spine and Sport, along with a strong academic foundation. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science from Hope College and went on to receive his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Life University.

As a newer practitioner, Dr. Nieuwenhuis takes pride in how much he has grown. He credits real-world experience with shaping his professionalism and strengthening his ability to handle complex and often high-pressure patient cases. “You quickly realize that practice is a different league than school,” he shared. “Being able to stay calm, communicate clearly, and rise to the occasion is something I’ve worked hard to improve.”

At the core of his work is a commitment to consistency, empathy, and connection. Dr. Nieuwenhuis believes trust is built by showing up every day and doing the best you can for each patient. He emphasizes the importance of meeting people where they are, understanding that everyone carries different challenges, and treating each individual with care and respect.

His appreciation for community is deeply personal. After spending ten years out of state for school, he and Krystal returned to the Mystic area in 2023, drawn back by family and the unique sense of connection that defines the region. “In a small town, you run into people you grew up with and reconnect,” he said. “There’s a sense of unity and familiarity that makes you want to be part of something bigger.”

Outside of his professional life, Dr. Nieuwenhuis is passionate about coaching, fitness, and helping others push beyond what they think is possible. He coaches CrossFit at Crossfit Dyr and finds great fulfillment in watching others grow stronger and more confident. He also enjoys gaming with friends across the country, playing hockey, and recharging at home with his family. While he is outgoing in his work, he admits he is naturally more introverted and values quiet time to reset.

Dr. Nieuwenhuis and his fiancée also enjoy participating in local events, including Mystic Chamber gatherings, and staying active in the community. Inspired by his hardworking family, he carries a strong work ethic and a desire to become a positive and lasting presence in the area.

Being recognized in the Community Proud series is something he does not take lightly. “I feel honored,” he said. “I’ve always wanted to be a pillar in my community, and this recognition makes me feel like I’m moving in the right direction.”

The Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce is proud to celebrate Dr. Jay Nieuwenhuis for his dedication to his patients, his passion for personal growth, and his commitment to strengthening the community he calls home.
