 About the Book

 At the beginning of the Great Depression, Vee Haines, daughter of a Midwest banker, steals her father’s luxury automobile on a fateful road trip westward. Stranded on the edge of the Dust Bowl in northern New Mexico, she fights to survive — and raise a son alone — in a place called Starve-Out that is not on any map. Decades later, in the 2010s, her family discovers that a silver bracelet Vee has worn for most of her life holds the key to her deepest love and darkest secret. Now it’s up to her grandson to find the truth. 

About the Author 

Lisa Hall Brownell is the author of the historical novel Gallows Road (Elm Grove Press 2022). She has presented to dozens of bookclubs, libraries, and other groups. A graduate of Brown University, the author divides her time between coastal Connecticut and the mountains of western Maine.
