Book Summary:

In the 1920s, archeologist Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon of Highclere Castle made headlines around the world with the discovery of the treasure-filled tomb of the boy Pharaoh Tutankhamun. But behind it all stood Lady Evelyn Herbert—daughter of Lord Carnarvon—whose daring spirit and relentless curiosity made the momentous find possible. Though not a trained archaeologist, she nonetheless pursued her passion, determined to leave her mark on the field and be treated as an equal by her male colleagues.

Nearly 3,000 years earlier, another woman defied the expectations of her time: Hatshepsut, Egypt’s lost pharaoh. From her father Thutmose I, she learned how to lead and through her political savvy she rose to guide her kingdom to prosperity. By her side was her trusted adviser and secret lover, Senemut. Though he was a commoner and she royalty, together they formed a partnership that allowed a dynasty to flourish. Though Hatshepsut’s reign was bold and visionary it was also nearly erased from history.

When Evelyn becomes obsessed with finding Hatshepsut’s secret tomb, she risks everything to uncover the truth about her reign. She must also confront the reality of the artifact trade—that despite regulations governing the removal of artifacts from Egypt, colonial antiquity collectors were selling them at alarming rates. Evelyn must rethink her assumptions as she resolves that valued artifacts must be kept in Egypt, their rightful home. But as danger closes in and political tensions rise, she must make an impossible choice: protect her father’s legacy—or forge her own.

Propelled by high adventure and deadly intrigue, Daughter of Egypt is the story of two ambitious women who lived centuries apart. Both were forced to hide who they were during their lifetimes, yet ultimately changed history forever.

Praise for DAUGHTER OF EGYPT

“Immersive … Benedict evokes the excitement of archaeology in colonial Egypt with an abundance of lush details. There’s plenty to enjoy in this story of two women defying expectations.” —Publishers Weekly

“In Daughter of Egypt, bestselling author Marie Benedict is at the top of her game, delivering a thoroughly absorbing story that takes place over two distinct time periods—in the early 20th century, and in the 15th century B.C.—as two very different women seek to leave their mark on a male-dominated world... Daughter of Egypt is a riveting tale of heartache, love and triumph, by a true master of historical fiction.” —Kristin Harmel, New York Times bestselling author of The Stolen Life of Colette Marceau

“Marie Benedict has the eye of a historian and the heart of a novelist. In Daughter of Egypt, Benedict unearths the entwined stories of two fearless women: one a forgotten pharaoh, the other a determined daughter of discovery. With dust-cloaked intrigue, sweeping adventure, and emotional depth, this novel excavates more than tombs—it restores lost legacies. An adventure packed with suspenseful intrigue, Daughter of Egypt is a page-turner that proves no woman’s story should ever be erased. Benedict brings buried women back to life and you won’t be able to look away.” —Patti Callahan Henry, New York Times bestselling author of The Story She Left Behind

“Marie Benedict has unearthed two of the most famous women in the Valley of the Kings. Daughter of Egypt is an emotional expedition to Egypt, and straight into the hearts of two women—the Pharaoh Hatshepsut and Lady Evelyn Herbert. As a historian and Egyptologist, I thought I knew these women and their worlds, but Benedict has imagined them as never before. They are their complete selves, women full of desire, hope, and their own dreams. Often portrayed in monochromes, these women are brought to life in vibrant color, under the blazing sun in the land of Egypt. This is a deep and touching story full of love, disappointment, happiness, and tragedy. It is a delightful and evocative journey from start to finish.” —Kathleen Sheppard, Egyptologist and author of Women in the Valley of the Kings

“As a scholar of ancient Egypt and fan of historical fiction, I read Marie Benedict’s new book, Daughter of Egypt, with high expectations, and can honestly say they were exceeded. Extraordinary. The historical elements are spot on, and those that are fictionalized blend seamlessly into the story in a realistic manner. Benedict does this in a way that is both entertaining and informative.” —JJ Shirley, Department of Classical and Near Eastern Archeology, Bryn Mawr College
