POSITION VACANCY

BUILDING OFFICIAL

Full-time (35 hours/week), union, exempt, benefit eligible 

Current Salary: $82,813.80-$112,069.15

Salary as of 7/1/26: $84,470.08-$115,431.22

(Salary commensurate with experience)

 

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Land Use & Development, this highly responsible position involves complex, technical work in administering and enforcing building and related codes.  Works involves responsibility for planning, coordinating and performing a comprehensive building advisory, inspection and enforcement program which requires a thorough knowledge of the State Building Codes and Statutes, town building ordinances and regulations related to fire, safety and health including inspections of sewer disposal and well systems.  Plans, organizes and assigns work to Assistant Building Officials and clerical staff. Ability to prioritize, organize and perform work independently, adjust quickly to changing priorities, adapt to varying work situations, work harmoniously, cooperatively, and courteously with others and communicate effectively both orally and in writing. The position requires the use of independent judgment, initiative and supervisory skills.

The education, experience and training required would generally be acquired with graduation from a college or university with major course work in civil or structural engineering, architecture, construction science, or related field; eight (8) years of increasingly responsible experience in the construction trades; or any equivalent combination of education, experience and training that demonstrates the ability to successfully perform the essential duties of the position will be considered.


Certification by the State of Connecticut as a Building Official in accordance with Connecticut General Statutes 29-261 and 29-262 and valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s License required.
